Get on board! The Public Works and Engineering Camp is just around the corner. High school students entering the 11th and 12th grade who are interested in pursuing a career in engineering, science, mathematics and public service fields are eligible. 2012 Public Works and Engineering Summer Camp Kicks Off its Fifth Season
The City of Houston, Department of Public Works and Engineering, will launch its 5th annual Engineering and Public Service Camp beginning June 4 through June 15th 2012. This innovative program enriches students with the many aspects that can be considered for careers in Engineering and in Public Works. The camp lasts for two (2) weeks and provides selected students with an up close look at the many facets and challenges that Public Works encounters on a daily basis. Students gain hands-on experience in a variety of tasks and learn about the skills needed to maintain the City's infrastructure.
Students visit several Public Works facilities and worksites and learn how coordinated efforts are involved in the planning, developing, implementing of various projects. Daily tours and activities of the Camp are geared toward a final presentation where students demonstrate what they learned during their camp experience.
Camp experiences will include:
- Drafting and reading a plan
- Building a city using Sims City Software
- Touring a construction project
- Street Repair and overlay
- Drinking Water Educational Center
- Visiting a water purification plant
- Visiting a wastewater treatment facility
- Repairing underground pipes for breaks and maintenance
- Visit the permitting center
- Transtar and
- City of Houston Traveler's Bureau
Near the completion of the program, students will visit City Hall and be recognized by City Council.
