Frequently Asked Questions

17. What could be leaking?

There are a number of areas to check.

  • Faucets are always a common culprit, but the hidden causes are the most trouble.
  • Poorly performing toilet flappers are the “silent killer” of water bills.  These can cause intermittent leaking long before you can hear or see water running in the bowl.
  • Seepage or line breaks underground can cause large losses quickly.
  • Occasionally, leaks develop behind washing machines or in walls.
  • Automatic refilling or overflow devices on pools, hot water tanks, commercial water towers, and other devices can malfunction.
  • Sprinkler systems can develop cracked lines or heads that will not manifest as leaks except when the sprinklers are on.  Check for these if you appear to be using much more water than normal when irrigating the lawn.
