The Storm Water Management Program is responsible for the oversight of the capital maintenance, and NPDES permitting requirements for the City. The program utilizes the services of Storm Water Maintenance; Engineering, Construction and Real Estate; and City Engineer to manage a comprehensive program that addresses storm water and drainage related issues throughout the City.
The maintenance of the storm water system includes cleaning, mowing and regrading of off-road drainage ditches and the cleaning and regrading of roadside ditches. It also includes cleaning storm sewer inlets and piping systems.The capital program is directed towards relieving structural flooding in neighborhoods and coordinating local and regional detention to not increase the water surface elevations in any of the Harris County Flood Control drainage systems.The City is operating under a Phase 1 NPDES Municipal Separate Storm Sewer (MS4) permit. This permit has multiple requires which include the following:
- Dry Weather Screening of Storm Sewer Outfalls
- Wet Weather Screening of Storm Sewer Outfalls
- Hazardous Household Waste Disposal
- Litter Control and Clean Up
- Street Sweeping
- Construction Site Runoff Monitoring and Enforcement
- Spill Response and Cleanup
- Public Education on Storm Water Issues
