What goes into the Design of a Bikeway?
Bikeways under the Houston Bikeway Program are designed by the City of Houston and built by the Texas Department of Transportation.
The design of bikeways must follow American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials guidelines to qualify for federal funding set aside for transportation enhancement projects or projects that reduce traffic congestion.
Under the Accelerated Bikeway Program, 80 new miles of bikeways will be designed by December 2002. Environmental, right of way, hydrological studies, and public comments are concurrent tasks underway that prepare for design.
Some of the major items considered in the design of bikeways are:
On-Street Bikeways
Off-Street Bikeways
Preparation of the right of way
